PR Lessons From Dad
Guilty. I am guilty of nighttime online shopping. Doesn’t matter if it's clothes, running shoes, or airplane tickets. My kryptonite is an evening with nothing to do and a debit card close by. This one particular evening, I ordered seasonings and a spicy hot chocolate mix from Rosebuds Real Food {not sponsored}. Three easy steps and viola, the package was on its way. Fast forward a couple of days, and it arrived. Who doesn’t LOVE getting packages?!! When I opened the box, imagine the surprise and delight when I not only found my order but a couple of products I mentioned to the owner that I wanted to try on my next order. Followed up with a sweet Happy Birthday message. What impactful thoughtfulness!! I was all in the feels of this business. Why am I sharing all this? Because this is a real world example of public relations.
PR is “the feels” others get from or about your business. PR is part of marketing. How do your customers and clients feel about your business? Do they look forward to coming into your warm and inviting shop? Do they look forward to your packages because you took time to wrap their order in tissue paper or you hand wrote a note of thanks? Do they appreciate the level of excellence you provide in customer service? ALLLLL these touches matter. When someone is generous, thoughtful, and kind it pricks our hearts. We remember and tell others.
As we all look to stand out from the noisy crowd, what personal touch can you make today, to demonstrate good PR?
Growing up, my parents owned a hardware store. During the summers, my younger brother and I would be at the store. Dad told us to always greet each person who walked with a smile and a “hi, welcome in!” Didn’t matter if they needed one nail or 40 gallons of paint. Make the customer feel welcome. Dad didn’t just tell us to do it; he demonstrated it by engaging every customer who came through the door. Asking how they were, their families, what project they were working on.
I was back in my hometown a few months ago. The businessman I was dealing with knows my dad. He told me what an impact my dad had on him. Dad was always helpful, listened, and made this man feel important. For a family-owned business that’s long gone, that is quite a PR legacy.
