Reflections on Risk, Resilience, and Running a Business
There are a few times a year when I like to pause and think about how far I’ve come on this journey. Regardless of whether it's personal or professional, at certain mile markers, it’s important to take time to reflect.
I remember making the (terrifying) decision in early summer 2022 that it was time to jump off the high dive and free-fall into my destiny. My boss was gracious and kind as she learned her Chief Communications Officer was giving a little over a month's notice. My employment would conclude at the end of the summer board meeting. The morning of the meeting, I did a short run and could hardly contain my excitement! Have you ever been so excited about something that you felt like you might explode?! The excitement far outweighed the terror of the unknown. Once the hugs and well-wishes were complete, I literally danced out the door! Even now, I am giddy remembering how it felt being on the edge of truly living my life!!
Fast forward two years. I would not change a thing. I took a huge risk on myself and this dream and it is paying off. Sure, there have been a few bumps, bruises, and scraped knees, but I wouldn’t have had it any other way. By the grace of Almighty God, I am standing. (Side note my health is back after incredible stress and adrenal fatigue)
Here are a few things I learned about myself over the last few years …
I can do HARD things. Sure, running a marathon or 50K is hard but leaving the security and stability of a 9-5 takes next-level audacity and courage.
I am brave. Brave to step out and risk being comfortable for a shot at my dream.
I learned to borrow confidence. I held plenty of optimism for this new business. I was winging it to some degree and getting through on a prayer the rest of the time. Which was enough. I borrowed confidence from the days of television when I would have to just ask for an interview from a stranger. Or go on national television with wet hair after a tornado blew through (live shots for The Weather Channel are still my favorites!).
Helping businesses like yours lights me up! To this day, I cannot imagine not supporting, coaching, and consulting small businesses and their owners to develop their confidence, bravery, and ability to step out of their comfort zone and try something like their local media.
Like you, I get stuck sometimes, procrastinate sometimes, and have a moment when I wonder if it’s all still worth it. In those moments, I remember my why and find my resolve. I wake up the next morning and get back to it. Knowing it’s not the destination I’m running after, it’s the journey of entrepreneurship, of helping others be successful, and going after dreams that made walking away from corporate success easy!
While the road may be uncertain at times, and while I may still feel like I’m cliff jumping on the daily, I cannot imagine my life had I not taken this true leap of faith. Thank YOU for letting me share this moment with you!!
